It was a tough Sunday for an Omaha family, marking the one-year anniversary when bullets pierced the walls of their home, killing 33-year-old Mickle Graham. One of the men accused of the murder was himself recently murdered.
While many spent the weekend surrounded by holiday lights and finishing their shopping, one family reflected on the sudden loss of a son, father and brother and how they could not take any comfort in the death of the man they believed killed him.
"It's a hard one to explain.” Frankie Nicholson was at a loss for words. Her son was murdered, she believes, because he flirted with someone and her friends didn't like it.
Mickle (pronounced Michael) Graham was on the phone in the kitchen talking to his sister in Minnesota when up to 20 bullets flew threw his fiance’s house.
One of the men arrested a year ago, Jacquaez Simmis, never went to prison for the homicide. He was gunned down last month.
“Parents are suffering,” said Nicholson. “We're losing our young ones. My heart goes out to the Simmis family. I would rather there have been justice through the court system. At least they would have had their family member. They could have still seen him."
Nicholson still showcases his fishing trophies in her home. Mickle, who had three sons of his own, had plans to move to Minnesota for a fresh start. “This whole situation in Omaha is wrong. I don't know what is wrong with people. The killings have been for nothing. You look at somebody the wrong way and they shoot you."
The family got together earlier this month on the day Mickle would have turned 34. It was celebration of his life. His mother wants to make sure he's not forgotten, even though his alleged killer never faced a jury.
