Something Somewhere Has To Be Cut

Nebraska state senators Wednesday morning voted first round approval for a bill that will eliminate state aid to cities, counties and natural resource districts.

The measure, LB-383, introduced by state Sen. Abbie Cornett of
Bellevue at the request of Gov. Dave Heineman, is expected to save
the state $44 million over two years. Lawmakers face a possible $1
billion budget shortfall.

Lawmakers supporting the measure say the cuts make up a small
percentage of each local budget and are a necessary step in
balancing the budget. Opponents say the cuts would shift the tax
burden to property owners.

Local government officials have said that even small cuts will hurt as they also deal with a sour economy.

The bill advanced Wednesday. It must go through two more rounds
of debate to be passed.
