Annexation plan passed on first reading. If the measure passes readings at the next two Plattsmouth City Council meetings, 43 acres on the northwest side of Plattsmouth will become part of the city proper.
The annexation area includes the strip mall and surrounding area on Bestmann Drive, and Oakhill Cemetery.
The Cassgram reports the Plattsmouth Planning Commission recommended approval at its December meeting.
Plattsmouth City Administrator Erv Portis told the planning commission that city services have been extended to the Bestmann Drive area.
Some council members were surprised to learn the cemetery was not already part of the city.
Even though the adjacent Plattsmouth Keno property has long been part of the city and now the entire Plattsmouth Plaza property is part of the city, Mayor Mike Bowman explained that the cemetery was never annexed—“It is city-owned property that was not in the city limits.” But nothing will really change, he added.
The police department’s jurisdiction will be extended to the area when the annexation process is completed.
The measure passed council on a unanimous vote.
