There was a strange string of events in southeastern Nebraska early Sunday morning. It begins with a stolen vehicle and ends with the vehicle being set on fire.
The owner of the car contacted the Gage County Sheriff’s office about 12:30 a.m. Sunday to say her car had been stolen from Wymore. Rochelle Baumann said the car went missing within the past half hour.
Then at 1:25 a.m., deputies went to Beatrice Community Hospital to investigate an assault. The victim said he was in the stolen vehicle when one of the suspects who stole it assaulted him. He then provided information about where they could find the vehicle.
Deputies went to the north side of Blue Springs Ball Park and found the vehicle had been crashed into a tree about 800 feet from the ball diamond. A rag had been placed into the gas tank and set on fire in an apparent attempt to destroy the vehicle.
The vehicle was towed away and placed into evidence.
Through their investigation, deputies arrested two 20-year-old men at their home in Blue Springs.
Patrick Wahlstrom was arrested for possession of stolen property, tampering with physical evidence, criminal mischief, willful reckless driving, unauthorized use of a propelled vehicle, and third degree assault.
Christopher D.R. O’Keefe was arrested for possession of stolen property, tampering with physical evidence, third degree arson, and criminal mischief.
Sheriff Millard “Gus” Gustafson says the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call his office at 402-223-5222.
