Residents in northwest Nebraska are cleaning up fallen trees and dead cattle left in the wake of a massive weekend snowstorm.

Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann and state emergency officials visited Chadron, Crawford and Harrison on Tuesday and met with local officials.

Chadron city manager Wayne Anderson says at least 90 percent of the properties in town saw some type of damage, mostly to trees that collapsed under wet, heavy snow and wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph.

Ranchers reported heavy cattle losses. No official counts were available, but Jack Hunter, the owner of the Crawford Livestock Market, estimates a loss of 2,000 to 3,000 head in the region.

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture was encouraging residents to keep detailed records of any losses in case federal aid becomes available.
