An Omaha man and his son were killed in a small plane crash in California over the weekend.

67-year-old Patrick Clarke and his son 41-year-old Scott Clarke were on their way back from their annual trip of race car driving when their plane went down. It crashed near Shaver Lake in the Sierra National Forest about 35 miles northeast of Fresno around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Patrick’s son and Scott’s brother Todd Clarke spoke with Channel Six’s Brittany Gunter Monday afternoon.

“They were about 27,000 feet about 35 minutes after takeoff and then something mechanically went wrong. We are not sure exactly what happened,” said Clarke. “It feels like a bad dream and everything is still in a fog.”

The Clarke family is a large one. Patrick had five children and there are 17 grandchildren in all.

Patrick was co-founder of NorthStar Financial Services. He was a devoted family man and often gave to others.

As for Scott, he was a doctor from Missouri with a wife and four children of his own. The family said Scott loved to fly and had done it for many years.

The family said both men were men of faith and knowing that has helped them get through this. “You hold on to the eternal aspect of life and we’ll be together again. You try to keep the faith."

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. Family said Scott had acquired the Cessna 421 about a year ago.
