Sleight Of Hand Thieves Get Cash

In the blink of an eye a suspected con artist stole $1,400 and the cashier didn't realize it until counting the drawer at the end of the day. It happened last month at a Papillion Walmart.

Papillion Police Sgt. Jeff Payton describes four suspected thieves as a gypsy-like team of till tap experts. "They are very good. They use quick talk and sleight of hand." Payton said the group is wanted in several states and was likely passing through the Omaha area.

Payton said the woman suspect used broken English to convince the cashier she didn’t understand the American money system. Looking at security camera video of the theft, Payton said it’s obvious the clerk was confused. As three male accomplices acted as lookouts in the customer service area, the woman reached into the cashier drawer and the cashier seemed more stunned than alarmed.

The suspect pulled out a stack of $100 bills and put the stack back in the drawer. What the cashier couldn't see was the suspect folding 14 $100 bills in a closed fist. She returned the rest of the bills to conceal the theft. Payton said it’s like a magic trick and the cashier watched the wrong hand.
