Shopping For Bargains

A combination of nice weather, a day off and big savings sends thousands to local stores looking for deals.

Many of those bargain shoppers are already filling their shopping needs for next year.

Stores across the metro area were packed by bargain shoppers with one goal in mind.

Saving money.

"Bargain Monday" is the third biggest shopping day of the year.

For many of those shoppers, like Carol Farrens, the offers were worth the trip.

She stopped by the Super Target near 125th & L.

"I'm finding deals and smiling," she said. "This is a good day. Sticker shock is before the 50% off."

Farrens planned to make a day of it.

"The plan is to go here and see what Christmas items are on sale, which I've already done, and we're hitting the mall."

The allure of big savings and a little exercise brought Ellen and Dennis Dotzler to Super Target.

Ellen is already planning ahead.

"I look for decorations and Christmas cards and just anything I think I might need for next year," she said.

But few shoppers benefit more from these deals than Kim Kirchhoff.

She came in from Atlantic, Iowa.

"Our family Christmas isn't until January 7th and I can save a lot of money," she said.

She's taking advantage of two of the biggest shopping days of the year.

"I'm here on Black Friday, don't kid yourself," she said. "I like to get the good deals when I can."

So with list in hand, she searches for bargains.

But she still has an eye toward next year.

"I've got Christmas lights (on the list)," she said. "Now those are for my husband for next year so he doesn't have a heart attack when he has to go buy the lights next year."

For bargain shoppers, Christmas lasts just a little longer.

"I thought it was over," Dennis Dotzler said. "But I think its just beginning."

Along with Super Target, Wal-Mart and Kmart are offering 50 percent off Christmas items, toys and clothing.

Even Bass Pro Shops is having a sale this week.

The National Retail Federation is predicting holiday spending up nearly 4% this year totaling just under $470 billion in sales nationwide.
