A mother was cited for child neglect after police were called to the Oak View Mall parking lot. The 31-year-old woman allegedly left her 2-year-old daughter alone in the car.
Police say an 18-year-old girl heard a car horn being honked repeatedly and went to investigate. She found the 2-year-old standing on the driver’s seat, honking. All of the doors on the 2007 silver Mazda were locked, so the teen called police.
When officers arrived they called for a locksmith to open the doors on the car and noted the little girl was wearing pajamas along with boots and a stocking cap. The report also states the temperature at that time was 21 degrees.
At some point, the mother returned and when questioned by officers she allegedly said her daughter was sleeping when they arrived at the mall and she did not want to disturb the girl. The mother also claimed she was only inside the mall for five minutes.
Officers dispute that claim in the report, saying they were on scene approximately a half-hour, the engine on the Mazda was cold and the mother had bags from three stores in her possession.
The police report also shows the girl was found to have 11 coins in her mouth at the time she was removed from the car, two quarters, six pennies and three dimes.
Annette Kajinga was cited for misdemeanor child neglect.
