Senators Kill Plan For Expanded Wheel Tax

On a vote of 37 to 4, senators Wednesday gave final approval to a bill that removes legal authority for Omaha to do that.

The bill carries the emergency clause so it will take effect as soon as Governor Dave Heineman signs it.

Under the original plan, people who live in surrounding communities but who work in Omaha would have been charged a tax that was supposed to have been collected by their employers. The stated purpose for the tax was to raise money for road maintenance.

Residents in the suburban communities raised immediate objections, noting among other things, that Omaha already collects a good deal of tax money from non-residents when they come into the city for shopping, for entertainment and for dining out.
