A Nebraska Senator comes out with strong words against a Nebraska Congressman. Senator Brad Ashford says Congressman Lee Terry has failed to lead on Veterans Affairs.
Rep. Terry is running for reelection. Sen. Ashford is the Democratic nominee.
Sen. Ashford held a news conference in front of the VA Hospital in Omaha today. He was surrounded by veterans and Omaha's Fire Union Chief and Veteran, Steve LeClair.
LeClair says, "Congressman Terry might claim he's supportive now, but leadership and character is about doing what's right when no one is watching and when he wasn't running for re-election, Congressman Terry has voted to slash veterans health care and voted against pay raises for the troops."
Senator Ashford says he is committed to supporting veterans by seeking a seat on the Committee of Veterans Affairs. He also outlined several solutions he believes would increase mental health treatment, improve access to STEM education, and a program that doesn't cost veterans their pension if they are disabled.
"When the Republican majority in the house closed the government down, that was in my view-at least in my adult life-the most significant insult to our country certainly and to our veterans." said Senator Ashford.
Senator Ashford was asked about Lee Terry's announcement he supports building a new veteran's hospital. This was his response. "I guess the question I would ask Congressman Terry is why are we 26th on the list? Why are we- I thought last year or the year before-we were going to build the new hospital. We’re behind Wichita, Kansas for heavens sake."
Congressman Lee Terry's campaign issued this response.
“I am just kind of shocked at how ludicrous this entire line is, because really there is nobody in Congress that you can look at and truly examine their record in a very honest way, as opposed to a political gamesmanship sort of way, and find anybody that has been more supportive of veterans than Lee Terry.” :said Congressman Terry's campaign manager Kent Grisham.
“I would call on Senator Ashford to be more honest when it comes to his criticisms, to not get caught up in this gamesmanship of looking at procedural votes, and look at the real issues that are involved. And then I would also ask Mr. Ashford, who has been a state Senator for many, many years, show us your record." Grisham said.
Congressman Terry's campaign also sent our newsroom a Tweet that was written recently by Representative Ron Barber.
When I made a motion to help our veterans, @LEETERRYNE, @RepEdWhitfield stood up! Thanks for supporting my effort to reform the VA.
