Senate Approves Extra $122 Million For Schools

The Senate has approved spending an additional $122 million on local elementary and secondary schools for the school year beginning in 2013.

The Senate approved the $2.8 billion measure Tuesday on a 26-23 party-line vote, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed. It also contains $5.5 million for preschool programs.

Republicans who control the House say they don't plan to debate the spending measure this year. GOP lawmakers and Gov. Terry Branstad, note they have approved a two-year budget that covers the next school year and say they'll deal with the 2013 school year in the next legislative session.

Senate Democrats say school officials need a 2013 budget now so
they can plan ahead.
Cedar Rapids superintendent Dave Benson says April is a crucial
month for making key budget decisions.
