The Senate has approved spending an additional $122 million on local elementary and secondary schools for the school year beginning in 2013.
The Senate approved the $2.8 billion measure Tuesday on a 26-23 party-line vote, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed. It also contains $5.5 million for preschool programs.
Republicans who control the House say they don't plan to debate the spending measure this year. GOP lawmakers and Gov. Terry Branstad, note they have approved a two-year budget that covers the next school year and say they'll deal with the 2013 school year in the next legislative session.
