A recent security breach was discovered this past week on all apple devices. The fix is simple, all you have to do is update your software, but many people aren't aware that it needs to be done. The breach allows hackers to gather your personal information even when you believe you are on a secure network.
Kerry Gurchin, a Junior at UNO, said he was shocked to learn his personal information could have been compromised. He said it was most concerning that a hacker would be able to get his credit card information.
" start to consider if I should just take my whole account down, you know, if I should just not use my credit card anymore," he explained.
To check to make sure your software is up to date, go to "settings", "general", "software update", then "install now." This will fix the breach on your apple device.
Andrew Embury with P&L technologies told WOWT 6 News, it was only now fixed due to lesser skilled attackers catching on and targeting credit card information.
"It’s a very, very major security bug," he said.
What’s even worse is that for the past two years, since 2012, there may have been even more serious problems related to the breach.
“We’re not quite sure who all knew…it was fairly likely that there were governments or private individuals that were exploiting it since then but it really only became known this week,” Embury said.
He continued explaining that often, with apple product, people become complacent thinking they're safe from viruses. Kerry believes it was bound to happen eventually.
"As Macs are more widely available, there are people who are making viruses and other mal-ware issues just for apple product," he said.
