School Shooter Training Includes Tossing Objects As A Distraction

Some Iowa law enforcement officials believe simply hiding from an armed intruder in a school may not be enough and agencies are now providing training on how people can do more than just wait for help.

A new tactic that promotes a more proactive approach is proving very popular. The program is called "ALICE," an acronym for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and escape.

About 35 people were trained in the technique in Cedar Rapids. The idea is for people to locate the threat, scatter and at times throw objects to distract the potential shooter.

The Linn County Emergency Management Agency hosted the training, which was paid for with a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
