Bennington Elementary School was placed on lockdown for about a half-hour Thursday afternoon due to a suicidal man who lives a block away.
The district superintendent told Channel 6 News the school at 156th Street and Bennington Road was shut down at the request of the Douglas County Sheriffs Department.
“With everything going on in the world these days we didn't know if the gentleman was still in his house or not or where he was,” said Bennington Police Chief Lester Johnson. “We weren't sure if there were weapons involved or anything. It was just to keep the kids safe and the school safe."
The suicidal man was taken into custody without incident and the lockdown was lifted. Investigators said they will make sure he gets the help he needs.
