Saving A Small Town Theater

A group of southeast Nebraska residents is trying to raise enough money to revive the Bonham Theater in Fairbury.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports a community group bought the 87-year-old theater at a sheriff's sale on Jan. 4.

Now the group hopes to raise $250,000 to $300,000 to restore the theater and convert its projection system to the new digital format.

The digital equipment alone will cost about $110,000. The price tag of the conversion is why the theater's previous owner closed it last August.

Brook Schwab is part of the group trying to save the theater. She says the small town of Fairbury needs the theater for entertainment.

Plus, the two-story theater is just off of Fairbury's courthouse square and a prominent downtown building.
