Sarpy County Deputies are asking the public to step up and help keep everyone safe this holiday season.
Deputies have compiled a list of 107 repeat drunk drivers who have outstanding warrants. One woman says we all should be involved in taking drunks off the road.
The faces may not be familiar to us all, but someone recognizes each and every person on the Sarpy County repeat DUI list. Roselyn Cappiello likes what the sheriff is doing. "It is our responsibility to try and stop it because it is obvious all the drunk driving laws in the world are not stopping drunk driving."
Roselyn knows this firsthand. She and her husband Mike helped start the Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter in Douglas County, but before that she herself was the victim of a drunk driver.
It was October 3, 1990 and Roselyn was driving in the area of Browne Street and Florence Boulevard and so was Lee Eddy Collins, except Collins was drunk and being chased by police. It wasn't the first time as a judge had already punished Collins by revoking his driver's license for life.
The Cappiellos say it didn't work 22 years ago and it doesn't work now. "I have been living as a quadriplegic for 22 years," says Roselyn. "My offender has gone on with his life."
Collins has gone on with his life and continued to offend. Since the crash that paralyzed Roselyn, Collins has gone to prison six times, all for driving under a revoked license.
The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department is asking for your help in tracking down DWI suspects that have failed to appear in court, failed to comply with court orders or failed to pay fines and costs. The sheriff’s office has released a list of those suspects and is asking the public to help get them off the streets.
Sheriff Jeff Davis says this is especially important as the Christmas season approaches and in light of several DWI crashes that happened in the metro last weekend.
If you know where these individuals are, call Crimestoppers at 402-592-7867 or the Warrants Unit at 402-593-4372.
