Sarpy County Residents Notice Strangers In Their Yards

Some Sarpy County families were startled to see strangers in their backyards; however, those strangers had good reason to be there.

Stacy Gosch told Channel 6 News Fact Finders that her dogs let her know someone was in their backyard. When she looked outside, she noticed a strange woman. Subcontractors for CenturyLink are in the area of Highway 370 and 96th Street marking the way for a new fiberoptic line.

Gosch said, "There are strangers in my yard and we haven't given them permission to come into our yard or dig up our yard."

Fact Finders has learned CenturyLink doesn't need permission. The company has an easement that was granted before the housing development was a development.

Karl Bieber, a spokesperson for CenturyLink, said, "In a utility easement, we don't always notify people cause we have to get in and get out, but going forward we'll make every effort to make sure people know when we're in the area and what we're doing."

Several yards in the Summit Ridge neighborhood were marked with spray paint and flags to tell cable workers where to avoid gas, water, and other utility lines.

One neighbor noticed her sprinkler line had been damaged. Bieber said, "Our goal is to cause as little disruption as possible and if we do any damage to work with the homeowner to get that remedied."

Though the underground main line doesn't provide connections to he homes it passes, homeowners understand the need for upgrades. They just want to know before workers are in their backyards.

Following a call from Fact Finders, CenturyLink promised to remind its subcontractors to give homeowners notice that they will be in their backyards. All workers should also be wearing identification.
