Gage County District Court Judge Paul Korslund is expected to make a ruling in June on a lawsuit against the state filed by a Lincoln woman who says her son was left near death while at the state-run Beatrice State Developmental Center.
Closing arguments have been made in the case. Sandra Ham's lawsuit accuses center staff of ignoring a diagnosis that her son, who is mentally disabled and has diabetes, had a swallowing disorder. She says the state allowed the facility to become unsafe.
Ian Ham was among nearly 50 "medically fragile" people moved out of the troubled center in 2009 following the death of an 18-year-old who received what state officials have acknowledged was inadequate care.
