Fire officials attribute quick thinking residents to saving their home from major fire damage.
The call came in just after 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 3700 block of S. 40th Street.
Residents called 911 to report a fire in the basement.
According to Battalion Chief Derald Murrell, when crews arrived they found a light haze upstairs and a closed bedroom door where the fire was.
Crews at the scene said when they opened the door, there was lots of smoke in the room.
Murrell said the residents closed the door, keeping the fire and smoke contained to that room. The two residents and their dog escaped without injury.
The damage was limited to a mattress and a wall.
Fire inspectors are working to determine the cause of the fire.
