Two part-time paramedics to be hired improving emergency coverage in Plattsmouth.
These positions will be in addition to the two fulltime paid personnel who currently work daytime hours Monday through Friday in the Plattsmouth EMS Department.
In May of 2010, following a period of volunteer rescue department turmoil and missed rescue calls, the city converted from an all-volunteer department to the current operation where volunteers cover the rescue calls when the two paid personnel are not on duty.
Mike Wood, the city’s Director of Emergency Medical Services, is one of the two staff members that handle the weekday calls. Under his direction, Plattsmouth EMS had added additional volunteers in the last several months. However, he told the city council that in recent weeks “we have had either delayed or no response to at least 50% of the calls after 5pm” and gave an example of where a volunteer EMS person was on her roster duty schedule at 11:30pm but could not immediately get another person to drive the squad. “It took fourteen minutes to respond to a call two blocks away,” he said.
