Sirens blare all over Cass Count Wednesday afternoon.
In the first accident at 12:58pm Cass County sheriff’s deputies, Plattsmouth Police, Plattsmouth EMS and Plattsmouth Fire responded to the highway intersection with Wiles Road.
Sheriff Wm. C. Brueggemann says Shandy Halverson, age 32 of Omaha, was driving a 2001 Ford F250 northbound on Highway 75, talking on a cell phone, when she failed to slow down for a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban. That vehicle, driven by Rebecca McMurtry, age 35 of La Vista, was stopped in the northbound lane waiting for traffic to clear to make a turn. Then Halverson, after observing the stopped vehicle, attempted to swerve towards the shoulder and ditch. However, Halverson collided with the rear bumper of McMurtry's vehicle.
Halverson was transported by Plattsmouth EMS to Bellevue Medical Center with minor injuries. McMurtry refused treatment.
Citations are pending for failure to yield and driving under suspension, says Brueggemann. Alcohol was not a factor and seatbelts were in use by both drivers.
In the second accident at 1:08pm, deputies, Murray Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Plattsmouth EMS, Plattsmouth Fire and Cass County Emergency Management Agency personnel responded to the area of the highway near Mill Road.
Brueggemann says Brody James Tangeman, age 18 of Omaha, was driving a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup northbound on Highway 75, following a line of traffic being led by a pilot vehicle through the construction zone. The construction milling equipment and the traffic created a dust cloud, greatly reducing visibility.
Tangeman failed to observe a 1996 Freightliner/grain trailer which had slowed. The grain hauling vehicle was driven by Jim L. Hudson, age 63 of Union. The pickup struck the rear of the grain truck. Tangeman was not wearing a seatbelt and broke the pickup steering column and struck the windshield. Tangeman was transported by Plattsmouth EMS to Bellevue Medical Center with minor injuries and has since been released. Citations are pending against Tangeman, says Brueggemann.
After 3pm, Plattsmouth Fire, Louisville Fire and CCEMA responded to a report of combine on fire in a farm field near 84th Street and Ranch Road. The fire departments inspected the equipment but found no fire.
