University of Iowa President Sally Mason says she'll work to improve the school's public outreach after the Iowa Board of Regents declined to extend her contract.

An Iowa Board of Regents document released Friday shows that regents declined to extend Mason's five-year contract when it expired in August and she's now an at-will employee. Board President Craig Lang told Mason in a letter that regents wanted her to "re-frame and re-prioritize" her goals after an annual evaluation.

The 62-year-old Mason has led the university since 2007.

She said Friday she's satisfied the board has approved a deferred compensation plan that promises $150,000 for every year she stays through 2016. She says regents want her to improve outreach and relationships with lawmakers and she says she's committed to reaching those goals.
