Rats Pop Out Of Toilets

After lifting the toilet lid early Friday morning Paul Pecha saw a rat looking up at him. He described it as eight inches long.

Pecha said, “The minute I seen him I shut the lid, and flushed the toilet and when I looked in there again he was swirling around so I flushed again.”

Three other neighbors had similar experiences. Tom saw two small rats in his home and the cat caught and killed both. He wonders if they also came through the sewer. He’s been pouring bleach in the toilet.

Paul Pecha said seven rats have been discovered in four neighboring homes near 29th and Gold in south Omaha near interstate 480.

City sewer maintenance director Craig Christians said the city put rat poison in a man hole that sits between the homes. He said colder weather last week likely drove the rodents into the sanitary sewer which connects with storm sewers in older parts of town.

Both city sewer crews and Douglas County Health will provide assistance to the homeowners.

Paul Pecha is doing his own rat prevention by placing a piece of plexiglas on the toilet stool, a brick on the lid and flushing bleach from time to time.
