An Omaha radio station is focusing on gangs. Channel 6 News was in the studio Sunday as former gang members opened up about the life they left behind.

Power 106.9 was packed with people ready to take on tough questions. The show is called “Expressions on the Edge.” The topic on this day was gang life. “You know we have some former gang members in the studio, we have pastors and parents,” said host C.H.

The idea of the show is to get the community talking and give people an outlet to express themselves. One of those willing to speak out was former gang member George Devers. “Selling drugs, the shootings, it's something I'm not proud of, but that was the destruction I was embracing."

"Why do you think these young people are out here gangbanging and shooting people?" asked C.H. It’s a question many ask. For Devers, he joined for the camaraderie. “I grew up very angry and didn't have that love in my household, so I looked for the neighborhood for that love."

The discussion wasn’t just in studio. It continued with people calling in and talking about how gang life has affected them and their neighborhood.

Another big question was how do you get out? What if gang life is the only life you know? Devers said you can always change. “You have to surround yourself with the people that will bring the best out of you."

C.H. said he hopes the discussion doesn’t end here and that this show will impact the youth of today. Last Sunday, the show featured Omaha police officers giving their perspective on gangs.
