The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has notified a unit of the Beatrice State Developmental Center that it could be placed on probation.

The unit could also have its license limited.

Nebraska Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joann Schaefer notified center officials about possible action against the Kennedy Building, even though the center has already located some of its residents and fired staff after abuse allegations surfaced within the unit.

Eight of the 16 center workers suspended in September have been fired, including one administrator.

Omaha Sen. Steve Lathrop introduced a measure Monday that would
extend the life of a legislative committee created in 2008 to investigate issues at the center.
