The Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary is crediting two Des Moines area businesses with providing food donations that have kept the organization operating.

The Des Moines research center, previously known as the Great Ape Trust, has struggled since founder Ted Townsend ended his financial support in 2011.

Hy-Vee and Anderson Erickson Dairy have been donating milk, salads and even pizza to feed the shelter's six bonobos.

A nutritionist approves all food given to the bonobos.

Hy-Vee began donating food to the sanctuary about a year ago, and Anderson joined the effort a couple months ago.

Gaila Conklin, the sanctuary's staff and volunteer coordinator, says "Hy-Vee has kept us open."
