On Tuesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. the Mayor’s Office in partnership with College of Saint Mary and numerous other community partners presents the free film screening of Precious Knowledge at Aksarben Cinema.
Panelists:
• Dr. Lourdes Gouveia from the Office of Latino Latin American Studies at UNO
• Nebraska State Senator Jeremy Nordquist
• Rebecca Gonzalez of Nebraska Appleseed
This film highlights the highly successful Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School and the fight to abolish the program after Arizona lawmakers in 2011 passed a bill giving unilateral power to the state superintendent of schools to abolish ethnic studies classes.
The fight to restore ethnic studies continues in Arizona and in other states, as education continues to adapt to a changing population. Directly following the film there will be a brief panel discussion.
