An energy company says it switched off power to hundreds of Cedar Rapids, Iowa homes on Tuesday to work on power lines as temperatures reached almost 90 degrees.

Alliant Energy shut off power to the homes of about 300 people Tuesday morning, saying it needed to upgrade voltage levels on some of their power lines. Power was turned back on about four hours later.

The temperature in Cedar Rapids had risen to 87 degrees by 1 p.m.

Power company officials said they couldn't postpone the shutdown to a cooler date. There was a chance of storms Tuesday night and they wanted the system working normally.
