Police have arrested 27-year-old Kevin Ryan and charged him with two counts of first-degree sexual assault after several patients at Midwest Cardiology came forward with allegations that he had inappropriate physical contact with them during ultrasound exams.
Channel 6 News was the first to report the allegations against Ryan. The first complaint was filed back in October, which has many people asking why it took so long to make an arrest? Ryan was arrested Wednesday morning, four months after the first incident was reported.
“We can't assume that something happened," said Omaha Police Officer Jake Bettin. "We have to go out and find physical evidence, witness statements, victim statements. We have to go gather all the information to be able to build a court case with this person."
The first report alleged that Ryan sexually assaulted a 55-year-old woman while she was having an ultrasound exam on her leg on October 11th. She received injuries from the exam and went to the hospital where she filed a police report on October 14th.
“You go to a doctors office for a diagnosis and to see what is wrong with you and then you're violated,” said the victim. The other two reports didn't surface until January and February. The victims, a 17-year-old and a 64-year-old, tell Channel 6 News their assaults happened in September and December.
“There's a lot of times that crimes occur that people are reluctant to tell us, they are scared,” said Officer Bettin. The Omaha Police Department says the investigation continued, but they needed to gather all the evidence before arresting and charging Ryan. “We need to make sure we're doing our job correctly and that's typically what happens when we get a report,” said Bettin.
Channel 6 News spoke with the attorney representing Midwest Cardiology, who said the office continues to cooperate with police and that they have instituted policies and procedures to ensure that this never happens again.
It released this statement:
"We hold the quality of care we give to our patients as our highest priority and want every patient to feel safe in our care. Kevin Ryan is no longer an employee of ours. We are cooperating fully with the proper authorities surrounding this investigation and will conduct a review of internal procedures to ensure all appropriate measures are taken. Patients with any concerns should contact us or the Omaha police. Due to the ongoing investigation, we will offer no further comment at this time."
Ryan remained in jail Wednesday night. He is expected to see a judge sometime on Thursday.
