Tuesday night, a Lancaster County Sheriff's deputy found a Lincoln Police Sergeant dead of a gunshot wound. The shooting appeared to be self-inflicted.

Sgt. Thomas Hamm, 53, was a 24-year veteran of the force.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and his parents.

A statement from police says: "Tom was a dedicated Lincoln Police Officer who loved his job, the people he worked with and our community. He was committed to making Lincoln a safer place for everyone to live and raise a family. He will be greatly missed by his family, coworkers and friends."

Hamm was a certified Crime Scene Investigator. He supervised the crime scene processing for what the department calls 'serious crimes' for more than a decade.

For eight years, Hamm was an active member of the department’s pistol team and competed nationally in competitions.

During his career, Sgt. Hamm was awarded the Exceptional Duty Award, Safe Driving Award, Certificate of Civic Achievement and Honorable Mention under the Mayor’s Award of Excellence program.
