Omaha Police have released new details of an officer-involved shooting last weekend. Dale Hickman was shot and injured on Sunday, July 13.

It happened at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Detectives learned that on Saturday, July 12, 2014, Uniform Patrol Officers were dispatched to 416 Walnut Street in response to four 911 calls. The last of these calls, was a disturbance call which was received just before 10:00 p.m.

When officers arrived, they located Hickman outside his residence with a bow and arrow. Hickman was also challenging officers to shoot him. The officers were able to convince Hickman to put down the weapon. The officers then transported him to Alegent Creighton Health to be placed in Emergency Protective Custody (EPC) because Hickman was displaying signs of mental illness and making suicidal threats. Officers left Mr. Hickman with Alegent Creighton Health medical personnel just before midnight.

On Sunday, July 13, 2014, at approximately 4:30 a.m., 911 received a call from Alegent Creighton Health that Mr. Hickman had walked out of the Emergency Department. Uniform Patrol officers, from Northeast Precinct, were dispatched at approximately 4:40 a.m. to locate an EPC patient who had left Alegent Creighton Health headed westbound.

Officers searched the area around Alegent Creighton and the downtown area in attempts to locate Mr. Hickman. However, officers were unable to locate Mr. Hickman.

Just after 6:30 a.m., 911 received another disturbance call to 416 Walnut and officers located Mr. Hickman. During the confrontation, Officer Lydon fired one shot, striking Dale Hickman in the chest.

Detectives have been unable to complete interviews with Mr. Hickman or his father.

His sister, Jennifer Hickman, 38 has been released from the hospital.

Earlier this week, Hickman's relatives told WOWT 6 News that Dale had just escaped from a hospital, wearing nothing but his hospital pajama pants and he wanted police to shoot and kill him.

On Monday, family members said Dale Hickman was trying to make good on a threat he made earlier in the evening while holding a bow and arrow.

The family still wants to know how Dale escaped and why they weren’t notified when he did.
