"Play Streets" Events Coming To Omaha

Is it tough to get your kids up off the couch and headed outside to play? Some events coming this spring and summer to Omaha will hopefully help get your kids outdoors and active.

They are called “Play Streets” events. About a half mile of streets will be blocked off for each event which will included games and activities. The events are designed to help kids and their families be more healthy and active.

“We'll have activities such as Zumba and yoga,” says Lisa Dworak, Omaha Play Streets Coordinator. “And then we'll have things like hopscotch, four square, rock walls, bounce houses. A whole wide variety of activities for the kids and their families.”

At each of these Play Streets events, organizers will hand out kits filled with things to help neighborhoods organize their own Play Streets events.

Four Play Streets events are planned for this spring and summer. The first one will be April 28th from 11 a.m. To 4 p.m. at Aksarben Village. The South Omaha event will be May 26th from 2p.m to 7 p.m. On July 27th it will move to downtown. And on August 25th the last Play Streets event will take place in North Omaha.

The goal of Play Streets events is to encourage social cohesion, facilitate opportunities for safe play citywide and create lasting change in public health by providing at least 60 minutes of dedicated programming for physical activity at each event.

The City is particularly concerned with improving public health by promoting physical activity, providing access to health and wellness options, and making fresh produce available in communities typically lacking access to healthy foods.

Play Street events will be targeted toward children and families in under served neighborhoods. Events will feature kid friendly activities and be connected to a food market; fostering a safe, fun environment that enables all family members to participate.
