NTSB: Air Show Crash Not Caused By In-Flight Collision

A preliminary investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board says there is no evidence that any in-flight collision took place before a plane crashed to the ground at an air show in Davenport, Iowa last Saturday afternoon.

The NTSB released a report Thursday based on information from video footage and witnesses from the air show. Pilot Glenn Smith of Frisco, Texas, died when his nearly 30-year-old training plane nosedived into a field north of Interstate 80. Smith was flying in formation with two other members of the HopperFlight team.

The three planes were executing a crossover break maneuver when Smith's plane banked to the right and hit the ground, bursting into flames.

Senior air safety investigator Aaron Sauer says it could be months before a final report is released.
