Classic Weather For Baseball, Business

Spring has finally come, albeit a month late, but we'll take it, and just in time for the TD Ameritrade Classic baseball tournament in Omaha.

Four teams, three days, six games with Creighton-Nebraska always a big draw. Mary Finke of Lincoln added some cash to the local economy Friday because she needed sunglasses. “Actually, I left them at another tailgate last week so here I am."

“We got a hotel across the street,” said another fan in town for the weekend. The hotels near the stadium will also get a boost. But when you talk about the neighbors in general around TD Ameritrade Park, business suffers when it's cold and it always seems like a long winter.

That wasn’t the case Friday, good news for merchandise sales and bars and restaurants. ”Nothing is better than when it's 80 degrees and there is nine innings across the street,” said a cap salesman.

“We've had a decent winter, obviously days like today are the best,” said a Blatt Beer and Table employee. Sure hockey at the ballpark and concerts during the winter filled chairs at Blatt Beer and Table, but there's nothing like opening the garage doors to allow a warm breeze to blow through to attract business.

Coolers mean tailgaters and when they are here that means more customers and that translates to cash. All of this was new to baseball fan Billy Polson, who moved to St. Louis seven years ago. “It's completely different. I think the last time I was here it was Rosenblatt."
