Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal traffic accident on Interstate 80 Tuesday morning as 44-year-old Michael D. Holcomb of Council Bluffs.
The accident happened just after 10:30 a.m. on the interstate near 50th Street.
Authorities say a Jeep Cherokee with possible mechanical problems was parked on the inside shoulder. Witnesses say Holcomb was outside of the vehicle on foot when he stepped into the traffic lane and was hit by an eastbound semi. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three lanes of eastbound 80 were closed for approximately two hours after the accident.
If you do break down on the interstate, Rose White with AAA Nebraska said, "Always exit the vehicle on the side away from traffic. And if you have reflective triangles place one ten feet behind your bumper, and then one 100 feet behind your vehicle, but also remain in your vehicle if at all possible."
She also encourages drivers who come upon someone broken down to move over a lane and create a lane of space. This advice is not the law, but an urged courtesy that can save lives.
The accident is under investigation.
