Pawnshops in Nebraska will have to hang onto secondhand jewelry they receive for at least two weeks before they can resell it, under a new bill signed into law.

The measure approved by Gov. Dave Heineman would apply to pawnbrokers, junk dealers and stores that specialize in secondhand
goods. It will bar the businesses from destroying, damaging or
reselling jewelry for 14 days after they receive it.

The bill has won support from the Omaha Police Department, as a way to prevent the resale of stolen goods. It was introduced by Papillion Sen. Jim Smith.
