Passengers In Collision With OPS Bus Speak Out

A couple is recovering after crashing into an Omaha Public Schools bus early Thursday evening.

James Jones and Kahla Barnes were taken to the hospital after Jones lost control of his two-door car and slid into a King Science Middle School bus near NW Radial Highway and Military Avenue.

Barnes suffered a concussion and dozens of cuts on her face and hands. She returned home from the hospital Friday, and the cuts on her face will take several weeks to heal.

"I'm grateful to be here really, to be alive right now after hearing that I could have been dead. I'm very grateful," said Barnes.

Jones has pain in his chest and collar bone, and his three-week old car was totaled. He said his primary concern was Barnes after seeing her slouched and disoriented after the accident.

"My main focus was on her because when you're the driver even if it's not your fault you feel some type of responsibility for what just happened so I was trying to make sure she was safe," said Jones.

All eight students on the bus were okay and immediately placed on an alternate bus.

Police said they gave Jones a citation for driving too fast for conditions.
