One Punch, Quick Drop…Would-Be Thief Gets Knocked Out

John Hammond says, "He was stealing stuff from my yard. Yeah, I know he was stealing my stuff, I don't know the guy."

Hammond owns his own company and for him, getting to work takes just a few steps out his back door. Wednesday however, it wasn't business as usual.

"There was a white, Dodge pickup backed up there, I pulled up here, I thought I don't know that Dodge."

After a closer inspection, Hammond realized someone was stealing his property. "The guy had a hold of that beam and was sliding it out and I said what are you doing. He said I’m taking this iron, I said no, no you're not taking this iron and he said yeah, I am."

Hammond says what the guy was trying to steal, a 40-foot long, 10-inch I-beam, is too heavy for just a one-person job. "I pushed the log in front of his truck, I ran and jumped in my pickup and I went around that way. Well, they got away from me, I came back and he was continuing to load my iron."

John said that had his dog been here at the time he would have notified him that there was somebody on the property. There is also two, no trespassing signs as well. John says he told the suspect twice, leave my stuff alone and get out of here, and that's when he had to take matters into his own hands.

"He was on the side of the box, he's on his hands and knees on the side of the box looking at me and he said, ‘I said move the truck.’ When he did, I just spun around and punched him."

One shot and a quick drop for the thief, who was out cold.

"We usually don't have anybody bothering him down here,” said John’s brother, Gene. The two work together. Gene wasn't there when things went down, but offers a challenge for anyone wanting to return.

"If he wants that piece of iron that bad he can come back and try and get it again I guess. They can come try their luck."

John says he's going to install security cameras around his property.

Police have identified the suspect as 39-year-old Bobby Cahill. He was booked for felony theft and trespassing after being released from the hospital. Police are looking for another man who was with him.
