Authorities say speed and alcohol contributed to a two-vehicle crash that killed one man and injured six Sunday morning north of Waverly.
The Lancaster County Sheriff's Department says a northbound Saturn SUV ran a stop sign and struck an eastbound Cadillac SUV at 70th and Waverly Road around 1:30 a.m.
The 37-year-old driver of the Saturn, Damian Smith of Ceresco, was ticketed on suspicion of drunken driving. The sheriff's office says the Cadillac's driver, 24-year-old Seth Coats of Lincoln, was likely speeding at the time of the crash. Coats and two of his four passengers were thrown from the Cadillac. Coats died later at a Lincoln hospital.
All four of Coats' passengers, 23-year-old Alicia Jeffres of Omaha, 21-year-old Rose Smith of Omaha, 26-year-old Jessie Switzer of Grand Island and 23-year-old Brett Crawford of Lincoln, and a passenger in the Saturn, 31-year-old Kristy Hille of Ceresco, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Smith was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
