The Metro Area Fugitive Task Force is asking the public for help in locating LaShawn Driver, believed to be in Omaha.
He is one of the city's most wanted and police say he has returned to town. Driver is wanted on a drug warrant, but police say he is also a known gang member with a violent streak. He has a long history of run-ins with the Omaha Police Department that include being suspected of twice firing shots at officers. Police want him off the streets as soon as possible.
The 22-year-old is wanted for allegedly dealing crack cocaine, but his time spent on the lam has seen his popularity with the Fugitive Task Force grow. "He is a most wanted, he's top five right now," said OPD Officer James Shade. "He has been on our Most Wanted List for quite a while and has recently moved closer to the top. We have new information that has come in that he is hiding out here in Omaha."
Omaha may not be the best place for Driver. In October 2009, he and two friends were arrested for allegedly firing a shot at an off-duty officer working security at the Sorensen Park Plaza. The next day they were released because authorities couldn't prove the three were actually firing at the officer. "He is a gang member here in Omaha."
Then in June 2010, Driver was again accused of firing shots from a van. His alleged target was an officer on patrol in the area of 56th and Ames. Driver and a 20-year-old man were arrested. Driver was convicted of possession of a stolen gun and dealing drugs. He was sentenced to a year and was released in December 2010. Records indicate the other man was not convicted.
Police want everyone to know that they should not try to apprehend Driver themselves. "He is a very violent offender, I would not approach him, please call police and we will come and pick him up," said Officer Shade.
