Pamida and Shopko have announced a merger, which would create one of the largest retailers in the country that focuses on smaller and rural communities.

Shopko is based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Pamida is based in Omaha. The retailer will drop the Pamida name and have its headquarters in Green Bay. Financial details were not disclosed. The company expects the merger to close in mid-February.

In a news release, Pamida President and CEO John Harlow will serve on the leadership team and help direct the transition to integrate the two retailers. Over the past two years, Shopko purchased seven Pamida stores and turned them into “Shopko Hometown” stores.

The company says once the merger is complete, it will accelerate plans to expand with new Shopko Hometown stores.

Pamida was founded in 1963. It operates 193 stores in 17 states. Shopko was founded in 1962. It operates 149 stores in 13 states.
