Two Omaha teenagers, who were hit by a car on their way to school Monday, have been released from the hospital.

A witness told WOWT 6 News the brother and sister were hit while crossing the street at 42nd and Frances, just south of Center Street, around 7 a.m.

Eighteen-year-old Stephen Smith and his sister, 19-year-old Makaelnne Smith were talking and alert at the crash scene; both were taken to Alegent-Creighton University Medical Center and were released Wednesday.

Several doctors and nurses stopped to help after seeing the scene on their way into work. One witness said the teens were wearing dark clothing, and the collision happened just before daylight.

Witness Ed Fritz said, "They had been hit. They were on their way to school. It was a brother and a sister. They were both concerned about each other. They were both concerned about each other. He was asking about her and she was asking about him."

Fritz was on scene seconds after the teens were injured. He went to work caring for 18-year-old Stephen who landed about 30 yards away from his sister.

"I had just gone through first aid training at the Med Center where I work,” Fritz said. “All I did was made sure he stayed still and didn't move, covered him up and kept him warm."

The driver of the car has been identified as 51-year-old Gregory Uryasz of Omaha. He was not injured.

The victims and their family have declined to comment.

The southbound lanes of 42nd Street, at Center, were closed for more than an hour due to the crash. Witnesses say it's not uncommon to see accidents at this intersection.
