The Omaha North Corps was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation, as support from the Nebraska State Giving Grant.
Three years of support bring aid to the programs that help promote a better community.
Operator of the Kare Kitchen, the Omaha North Corps serves a free lunch to the community in need, Monday through Friday, all year round. It’s the only daytime community center meal program of its kind in North Omaha.
In 2011 a total of 36,675 meals were served by the Kare Kitchen, for a 34% increase from 2009. For this 2012/2013 year, the grant can again help serve more than 36,000 meals.
“The grant awarded from the Wal-Mart Foundation will be of great help as we feed an average of 150 individuals Monday – Friday in our noon feeding program,” said Lt. Pamela Kasten, Corps Officer, Omaha North Corps. “We will also be offering cooking classes to the adults who visit us each day in an effort to equip them to cook healthy meals with what is received from their local food pantries.”
