Omaha Mayoral Campaigns Not Wasting Time

Mayor Jim Suttle and his competition, Jean Stothert, are kicking their campaigns into overdrive after Tuesday's primary. An attack ad against Mayor Suttle has already hit airwaves as the next step begins.

It's an ad that's setting the tone for the next step in the mayoral race and it's accusing Suttle of raising taxes over his last term. However, the mayor isn't giving it the time of day. Instead, he's focusing on getting his message out.

“That's what I am, a progressive vision as we go forward, focusing on jobs, strengthening our economy, and even propelling us into a higher limelight nationally and worldwide."

His opponent Jean Stothert doesn't know where the ad came from, but isn't disagreeing with it. “The things that they talk about in there are accurate and true and it's a reality. They're reflecting back on Mayor Suttle's four years as mayor of Omaha and what happened during his tenure or what didn't happen."

We found out the ad was paid for by the Nebraska Leadership Forum, a group that started last September, led by an Omaha man named Tim Barnes. So far, the group has worked on issue advocacy through legislative races.

In this race, it claims it's not working on behalf of Stothert, but it's concerned with making the information against Suttle available.

Stothert says she's not focusing on the ad either, but plans to keep campaigning and tell Omaha where she stands on the issues, like the relationship between the police and community.

“I am 100 percent supportive of some sort of citizens review board where citizens take part in reviewing and making recommendations to the mayor."

Mayor Suttle was unable to comment on the police brutality topic Thursday, but will speak on it Friday morning after the Omaha Police Department's news conference.
