An Omaha teenager, originally charged as an adult for allegedly running over a police officer, will now have her case heard in juvenile court.
In December 2011, Omaha police spotted a suspicious car at Standing Bear Lake. Police say when an officer approached the car, it took off and ran over the officer. Officers at the scene fired on the car, but no one was hurt.
Seventeen-year-old Laura Kramer is the alleged driver in the incident. At the time of her arrest, she was charged with flight to avoid arrest, possession of drugs, and tampering with evidence; however, she was never charged with assaulting a police officer.
At her first court appearance, Kramer's attorney explained that the Marian student was a good student that simply got scared and made a poor choice.
"Laura's actions weren't premeditated, she's written a letter of apology, she's taken responsibility, she's addressing her issues," said her attorney Joe Howard.
Both the prosecution and defense are confident that Judge Joseph Troia reviewed the case thoroughly, and that juvenile court can give Kramer the treatment she needs.
"We obviously charged her here in district court so we felt that it was serious enough that we needed to do that, but certainly juvenile court has the services to address this and we're confident that will happen up there," said Brenda Beadle with the Douglas County Attorney's Office.
Two other 17-year-old Marian students were in the car. Those students were released and never charged.
