A Charles City, Iowa police officer faces a misconduct charge, accused of brushing off a woman's report of rape.
Officer Todd Smith has been charged with misdemeanor misconduct. A court report says Smith responded to a rape report on July 14th. The report says Smith told the woman he doubted the bruises she showed him were new and that if there had been sex between her and the suspect, it was her fault because she'd been drinking. The report says Smith didn't perform any of the investigative duties required of him.
The 49-year-old Smith released a statement in which he says he isn't guilty. Smith's attorney says it's "a case of perceived insensitivity."
