Members of the Occupy Lincoln movement have agreed to withdraw from their encampment near the Capitol to make way for a spring renovation project.

Mayor Chris Beutler's office announced Monday that members would leave the Centennial Mall area by May 1. The group's governing structure, the General Assembly, approved the agreement Sunday.

City officials had set a March 1 deadline for the occupiers to leave, to assure contractors that they would have space to store materials and equipment. Beutler said in a statement that the compromise will allow construction to begin in early May.

Occupy Lincoln established its camp in October as part of the broader movement to oppose what members view as corporate excess.
