A quick u-turn for a downtown Plattsmouth parking spot will get you a warning ticket.
That’s what you’re likely to receive from the police department if you make the wrong turn in the wrong place on Main Street in downtown Plattsmouth.
The Plattsmouth City Council talked about the number of U-turns being made and motorists crossing the double yellow lines to grab a parking spot to their left. U-turns can only be made at the very east end near Richey Street.
Councilman Rod Jenkins brought it up for discussion after observing the traffic infractions in recent months. He said he’d be willing to spray paint the double yellow lines himself if need be.
Police Chief Steve Rathman said he has passed the council’s concerns onto his officers and wants to educate the public before handing out formal tickets. Officers are not going to be waiting for violators downtown because they have other areas to patrol and other duties to attend to, he said, but if they do observe an illegal turn the officers will be talking to the driver in hopes that word gets around. If the problem persists, it will be up to the officer’s discretion as to whether a warning or a ticket is issued, said Rathman.
