New Year's Eve DUIs

It has become almost as much of a tradition as the New Year's Eve champagne or the traditional kiss.

But the New Years Eve DUI enforcement effort has its roots in keeping us all safe.

New Year's Eve is one of only a handful of big drinking nights or that is the tradition or perception day. It is also one of the biggest DUI enforcement nights of the year. Local law enforcement tells me they did not have to look long to find suspected drunk drivers.

Of three overnight accidents in Omaha where Channel 6 News cameras were, at least one of them, a head on collision on 144th is believed to be the result of alcohol.

New Year’s Eve for Sarpy County Deputies was a pretty normal night.

Lt. Russ Zeeb says, "Our officers on the street arrested two for DWI last night."

Two is an average number of suspected drunk drivers arrested by the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office on any day of the year but Lt. Zeeb says alcohols impact goes further than metro roads.

Early Tuesday morning a young woman wandered away from a party in the area of 168th and Giles.

Lt. Russ Zeeb says, "She is out in the environment, under the influence of alcohol, with no protection and it was about 3-and-a-half hours that she was out in the environment before she was found."

She was rescued and will be alright but many feel is should never have happened.

It will be a day or so before the number of DUI arrests are added up but whatever that number is local law enforcement says that it is too high.

The law office of Hauptman, O'Brien, Wolf and Lathrop sponsors a free cab ride home every New Year’s Eve.

We don't have firm numbers but one cab driver told Channel 6 News more people took advantage of the offer than he has ever seen.
